Subscription Boxes

There’s something special about getting a parcel in the post. It’s seemingly ingrained into us that excitement and joy of unwrapping, exploring, and discovering.

As a child I remember hearing the whipper snipper engine of a motorbike & Mum saying that the Postie had been. We’d rush to the letterbox as if the contents may magically disappear if we didn’t get there in time. I still remember how high the mail box seemed as I peered in, teetering on my tippy toes. I still remember the filigree post and the heavy white enamelled cast iron construction that could really take your fingers out if you lost control of the lid.

More significantly I remember what used to come in the mail.

We grew up with much of our family in Scotland so highland cow (coo) & Nessy postcards were a staple. They carried tales of love, cold weather & plans for the future. They would ceremoniously be placed in high regard on the fridge. It was special when they came…Then there were the parcels. At Christmas and Birthdays a brown parcel always came & it was always amazingly exciting. My brother would get incredible European editions of collectable matchbox cars that you literally could not get in Australia back then. It was exclusive; we, via post were treated to things you just couldn’t get from a trip to the shops. For example the best parcel ever contained Scottie dog pyjamas. My penchant for PJ’s & little black dogs deeply rooted at 5 years old.

I’m more than happy to admit I need to be checked into Betty Ford for online shoppers… the man at the early parcel pickup window at the local post office chats with me like an old friend...That's how much I shop online...yet, there’s something different about getting a package when you don’t know the exact contents. It throws back to the fun and frivolity of opening presents from Santa.

So here tied up in nostalgia are grounds & rationale for loving subscription boxes:
 1. Hype going to letterbox (power walk, skip, run… you know the drill)
 2. Something just for you (no sharing)
 3. Discover something you never knew existed (what?! There’s such a thing as inkjet nail printing technology?!)
 4. Opportunity to try something you wouldn’t normally (bye-bye comfort zone)
 5. Something not everyone in your area will have (be your own rainbow)
 6. You don’t always know what you’re getting (Suuuuurprise!)
 7. Gratitude refresher course (be thrilled with what you got!)
 8. It’s not bills, bills, bills
